A Word From the Athletic Director...
St. John Lutheran has had a storied history of excellence
in athletics. There have been many District, Regional, and Sectional
Championships throughout the years. Football, Basketball, Baseball,
Volleyball,
and Track, for both boys & girls...even State Champions in Track
& Field! And recently, our Varsity Girls Volleyball team advanced
to the Final Four in State competition for 4 years in a row!
Our goal will always be for Christ-centered excellence! So
as we look to the future, we will continue to mold and shape our
athletic programs, and focus on the development of the total individual
athlete: intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, socially, morally,
and of course
physically, as we strive to be champions!
-Antony Fisher, antony.fisher@stjohnocala.org
Athletic Mission Statement...
To establish an interscholastic athletic department that
enhances the Christian educational process of our students.
Through participation in athletics, student-athletes will have
the opportunity to develop physically, emotionally, socially, and
spiritually. They will recognize the presence of God in oneself
and in others during competition. Athletics provide the
opportunity for the student-athlete to exhibit a progression of
physical skills and knowledge of a particular sport, enabling him/her
to apply these skills and knowledge to new situations in a variety of
learning formats. Student-athletes, coaches, and parents are
called upon to work together in a true spirit of sportsmanship to
assist in creating an environment in which those Christian values can
be revealed, tested, and proven relevant both to participants and the
entire school community. Each member of our community seeks to
encourage, instill, and foster such growth and development in all
student-athletes.
Athletic Philosophy...
St. John Lutheran School has a commitment to an athletic
program that both reflects and teaches Christian character, teamwork,
and integrity as well as skills and techniques of various sports.
All participants from athletes to coaches, from parents to
spectators, can expect a quality experience rooted and grounded in
respect, teamwork, humility, self-confidence, integrity, pride, and
Christ.
The coaches of athletics here at St. John Lutheran School
are requested to work with Administration and the Athletic Director in
emphasizing our mission of placing Christ, academics, family, and self.
In order to fulfill the mission, achievement of the following
Athletic Department goals must be a priority.
Our program shall be:
- oriented to the age-appropriate needs and interests of boys and girls;
- viewed as supporting the philosophy and goals of the school;
- providing experiences that enhance the opportunity to develop
responsibility, initiative, leadership, cooperation, self-direction,
and Christian character;
- providing students with exploratory experiences that have physical,
social, and emotional value for the present and future;
- providing leisure time and recreational experiences that will have
both immediate and carry-over value;
- providing for widespread participation by the entire student body;
- avoiding emphasis on contests that exploit students for the benefit
of the school, the teachers, the parents, or the community;
- an integral part of the total educational program;
- in proper perspective to the educational program in relation to
teacher time, student time, school emphasis, school budget, facilities,
and other factors.
Athletic
Objectives...
The St. John Lutheran School Athletic Program will:
- provide opportunities for student-athletes to excel in teamwork,
sportsmanship, self-discipline, and moral character;
- promote pride for athletes, coaches, parents, community, and school
personnel;
- provide each participant with experiences that will be positive,
educational, and moral;
- develop within each student-athlete the individual and team skills
necessary to compete successfully and for them to reach their God-given
potential;
- provide understanding of body growth and development, and the
importance of good health in aiding that growth development;
- develop the ability to sacrifice for the good of the team by seeing
himself/herself as an intricate part of an effort larger than
themselves.
The St. John Lutheran School Athlete will:
- learn how to cope with success and failure, how to strive toward a
common goal, and how to discipline himself or herself;
- learn to make sacrifices, to accept responsibility, and to be loyal
toward chosen endeavors.
The St. John Lutheran School Athletic Staff will:
- provide the best opportunity for student-athletes to excel in their
development;
- help student-athletes become contributing members of society;
- above all, provide a Christian example for players and fans;
- work as hard as they can to promote the total athletic program.
